Every now and then, we see posts pop up from people looking for hedgehog breeders — especially around Scotland — so I thought it was time for a little friendly chat about our spiky friends! 💚
Because let’s face it, hedgehogs are adorable. Tiny feet, twitchy noses, and that snuffly little waddle — what’s not to love? But before you rush out to find one, there are a few really important things to know first.
🏡 Wild Hedgehogs vs African Pygmy Hedgehogs
Here in the UK, our native hedgehogs are protected by law — meaning they can’t be kept or bred as pets. They belong in our gardens, snuffling through the leaves, not in a cage indoors.
If you’re hoping for a pet hedgehog, what you’re actually looking for is the African Pygmy Hedgehog (sometimes called the Four-Toed Hedgehog). These are a completely different species — smaller, domesticated, and legal to keep — but they come with their own set of care needs.
💡 Before You Buy or Adopt
It’s easy to fall in love with those little faces, but hedgehogs aren’t as low-maintenance as they look!
Here’s what to consider before bringing one home:
1. Temperature Control: They need consistent warmth — cold temperatures can cause hibernation attempts, which are dangerous for them.
2. Diet: They require a balanced mix of protein, fibre, and fats. Natural treats (like insects and safe forage) can make a big difference to their wellbeing.
3. Vet Care: Always check you’ve got an exotic vet nearby who can treat hedgehogs.
4. Behaviour: They’re nocturnal — which means they’ll be running laps at 3 a.m. while you’re trying to sleep! 😅
5. Ethical Breeders & Rescues: There are amazing, welfare-focused breeders and rescues out there, but please avoid “backyard breeders.” Always check for proof of health, clean conditions, and proper handling.
If you’re in Scotland, it’s worth reaching out to hedgehog-specific rescues first — many have hoglets or adults needing forever homes.
