You find a mushroom in the wild. It looks familiar. An app thinks it knows what it is. Google agrees.

So… can you eat it?

This Sideways & Unboxed investigation uses wild mushrooms as the starting point for something much bigger: how do we decide what to believe when the evidence isn't perfect and getting it wrong actually matters?

Rather than simply teaching children mushroom names, learners become mushroom detectives. They'll observe, question, investigate, compare sources, challenge assumptions and decide what the evidence genuinely allows them to conclude.

๐Ÿ„ Inside the pack:

  • Flexible learner activity pack – use as much or as little as suits your learner

๐ŸŒฟ Learning covered

This investigation naturally combines biology, nature study, scientific enquiry, critical thinking, digital literacy, research skills, maths and data, English and communication, outdoor learning and independent decision-making.

It also introduces an increasingly important idea for young people:

A confident answer isn't necessarily a reliable answer.

Learners explore what AI and identification apps can do, what information they might be missing, why several websites aren't necessarily several independent sources, and why the consequences of being wrong should influence how much certainty we require.

๐Ÿง  Made for learning Sideways

There is no requirement to complete every page.

Learners can write, draw, photograph, discuss, record a video, make slides, investigate outdoors, create a voice recording or disappear down an unexpected research rabbit hole.

The aim isn't worksheet completion. It's curiosity, reasoning and growing independence.

And importantly, “I don't have enough evidence to know yet” is treated as a successful scientific conclusion.

Suggested age: approximately 9–14, easily adaptable depending on ability and interest.

โš ๏ธ Safety: This is an educational investigation, not a guide to identifying wild mushrooms for eating. Learners are never instructed to taste unidentified fungi. The pack deliberately teaches why photographs, AI, apps and individual sources should not be relied upon to establish edibility.
