My Honest Thoughts on Breeding vs Rescue
I’ve worked with small pets for over a decade – through rescues, with breeders, and running my own sanctuary. Because of that, I often get asked what I think about breeding.
The truth? It’s complicated.
Breeders do important work – preserving breeds, improving health lines, and reducing genetic issues through careful selection. Done well, breeding is crucial for the future of many species.
But… I’ve also seen the darker side while rescuing. The “I’m bored now” phase usually hits at around two years old, and that’s when I’ve had countless pets surrendered – often because they were adopted as babies without long-term planning.
Rescues take extra steps – home checks, adoption forms, guidance – to make sure pets go to prepared homes. Some breeders do this brilliantly, but in my own experience, it’s sadly not always the case.
What breaks my heart is knowing that if more people adopted older animals, fewer would end up being surrendered. Babies are irresistible – I get it – but rescues are full of wonderful older pets waiting for homes too.
If you’re considering adding a new furry friend, I’d always encourage you to explore both options – but do your homework on where they come from, and think about the full 6–8 years ahead, not just the first cute phase.
