🐹 “Do You Need a Special Vet for Guinea Pigs?”

Published on 15 July 2025 at 09:02

Someone messaged me recently asking if guinea pigs really need an exotic vet — and if so, what kind of costs they should expect.

It’s a question I get asked a lot — especially by first-time piggy owners. And I LOVE when people reach out for advice like this, because it shows how much they care 💚

So let’s clear it up:

✅ Yes — guinea pigs are classed as exotics.

And no, that doesn’t mean you need a zoo vet 🙈

It just means that your average dog & cat vet might not have the right training or confidence with small prey animals.

Guinea pigs need someone who understands:

How to handle them gently

The risks of anaesthesia

Gut issues & dental problems

How quickly they can go downhill when unwell

🏥 For anything serious, I personally use Vets for Pets in Stourbridge — they’ve been brilliant and are well-regarded in the exotic vet world.

💷 As for prices? Right now, I’m not in active rescue so I can’t speak to current exacts — but consults generally start around £35–£65, with treatment on top. Always ask for a rough estimate if you're unsure — most good vets are happy to talk it through.

And here’s the real takeaway:

👉 If you’re ever unsure — reach out.

I’ll never judge, I’ll never laugh, and I’ll always do my best to help.

Your piggies deserve care you can feel confident in. And you deserve answers from someone who’s been there.
