If you’ve just welcomed a 3-toed box turtle into your life — congrats! These little characters are full of charm, but they do have some specific needs when it comes to care. Here’s a helpful starter guide to get you going:
๐ฟ Diet Tips
Box turtles are omnivores, so variety is key:
Safe leafy greens & weeds (think dandelion, plantain, clover, chickweed)
Colourful veggies (squash, carrot, sweet potato)
Small amounts of fruit (berries, melon, mango)
Protein sources like slugs, worms, snails, insects – or an occasional boiled egg or quality cat food
๐ก Don’t forget calcium + D3 for shell and bone health!
๐ Lighting & Temperature
UVB lighting is essential for calcium absorption.
Create a warm basking spot around 85–90°F (29–32°C) and a cooler side near 70°F (21°C).
Keep a proper day/night cycle for rhythm and health.
๐ก Enclosure & Habitat
Outdoors is ideal (if it’s safe!), with shade, shelter, and space to roam.
Indoors, avoid glass tanks – go for a tortoise table or large custom setup with airflow.
Provide a digging-friendly substrate like organic topsoil + coconut coir, hiding spots, logs, and a shallow soaking dish.
๐ง Humidity
They thrive with moderate humidity. Mist the enclosure and provide a damp hide – think forest floor!
๐ฑ Bonus Tip: Many of the natural plants turtles love are the same ones used in our herbivore forage blends at Guinea Gourmet Treats. If you forage yourself or want to know what’s safe, feel free to reach out!
