“Ash Will Give Your Rabbit Diarrhoea!” – A Forage Story Time…

“Ash Will Give Your Rabbit Diarrhoea!” – A Forage Story Time…

We had a comment recently warning that ash (yep, the tree – Fraxinus spp.) can give rabbits diarrhoea.

Now… they weren’t entirely wrong – but let’s unpack it because this is exactly why education matters when it comes to natural forage.

You see, forage isn’t just good or bad – it’s all about how it’s used, how much is fed, and what it’s paired with. That’s the part most people miss.

Ash Isn’t the Villain – Misuse Is

Ash leaves have been used in animal medicine for years – they’re a mild anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and support joint health. But just like mint, parsley, or even kale – too much of a good thing can tip the balance.

We never use ash as a main ingredient

It's included in tiny, intentional amounts

Always within a wider mix designed to support health, not disrupt it

So no – ash won’t “give your rabbit diarrhoea” when used properly. But if someone chucks a handful of fresh ash leaves into a bowl, especially for a rabbit with a sensitive tummy or without introducing it slowly… yeah, that might cause issues. Same goes for dandelion, clover, or even apple leaves in excess.

Let’s Stop Fear-Feeding

One of the biggest myths in the small animal world is that things are either “safe” or “dangerous” – black or white.

But forage doesn’t work that way.

It’s a balancing act of:

Portion control

Plant properties

Species-specific needs

Digestive health

And above all, variety

Our Mission Isn’t Just Treats – It’s Trust & Teaching

At Guinea Gourmet Treats, every single mix we make is backed by:

Years of rescue experience

Species-specific nutrition knowledge

And a strong belief that education matters more than fear-mongering

Instead of throwing around warnings, let’s talk about it. Let’s learn together. Let’s teach others how to feed in a way that builds resilience, enrichment, and health.

Forage isn’t the problem. Misinformation is.

Let’s feed smarter, not scarier.
